A natural gas-powered public transit bus exploded on a street in Seoul, capital of South Korea, on Monday, injuring 17 passengers and passersbys, local media reports said.

Police said the explosion took place at around 16:57 local time, when the bus, using compressed natural gas, was waiting for the light to change on a motorway near Haengdang Subwan Station in northern Seoul.

A 28-year-old female passenger was seriously injured, while 16 others, including the drive and passersbys suffered minor injuries, reports said.

Police assumed that a possible leak in the gas tank in the bottom of the bus had caused the explosion due to hot weather. Further investigation will be conducted to figure out the exact cause of the accident.

About 95 percent of public transit buses in Seoul use compressed natural gas as fuel. Local officials pledged to take immediate measures to check the safety of all gas-powered buses, according to local media.
